“Samarkand paper” receives official geographical indication status

2571“Samarkand paper” has officially been registered as a geographical indication. The news was announced by the Samarkand Regional Department of Justice.
Shuhrat Abduhalimov, Deputy Head of the Samarkand Regional Department of Justice, presented the geographical indication certificate for “Samarkand paper” to Zarif Mukhtorov, head of the “Konigil-Meros” handicraft center.
For reference, a geographical indication is a form of intellectual property that certifies a product’s unique connection to a specific region. It signifies that the product’s quality, reputation, or other characteristics are directly linked to the natural, human, or historical factors of that area.
It should be noted that several other products have also received geographical indication status in Uzbekistan. These include “Gijduvon shashlik” (registered on August 24, 2023), “Guzor tandoori meat” (January 8, 2024), the world-renowned “Samarkand bread” (February 4, 2024), and in June 2024, “Khorezm tukhumbaragi,” “Andijan headdress,” “So‘qoq somsasi,” and “Samarkand pea soup.”
