5681Today on 14 October, 38 people suspected of participating in the riots in Karakalpakstan returned to their homes on the guarantee of MPs. The Press Service of the Supreme Council of Karakalpakstan reported this.
Initially, 22 citizens who were suspected of riots in Karakalpakstan were returned to their homes based on a request from the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and the guarantees of MPs and the principle of personal privacy. Later, 16 more people joined them.
"The people suspected of participating in the riots, those who were detained, regretted their crimes and the appeals by their family members were studied, and it was decided to release them, taking into account the fact that they were the only breadwinners," - the report said.
In August of the current year, 34 citizens who took part in the riots returned to their families.
We remind you that on 1-2 July of the current year, in the city of Nukus of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, some citizens, misinterpreting the constitutional reforms underway in the Republic of Uzbekistan, organized unexpected demonstrations.
The Supreme Council of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karakalpakstan evaluated the situation as an attempt was made to take over state administration bodies in Nukus.
After that, on 2 July, the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev arrived in Karakalpakstan and talked to the people of Karakalpakstan.
Also, taking into account that the discussion of amendments and additions to the Constitution is still ongoing, and after studying the opinions and comments expressed by the people of Karakalpakstan, the President approved that the articles 70, 71, 72, 74, 75 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan in their current version should be left unchanged.
On 4 July, the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis (Parliament) of Uzbekistan adopted a decision not to change the articles of the Constitution regarding Karakalpakstan.
During the incidents, 516 people were arrested, 243 people were injured, and 18 people were killed. According to the case, a criminal case has been initiated under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan (an attempt to destroy the constitutional order of the Republic of Uzbekistan), Part 4 - "Conspiracy to seize power or overthrow the constitutional regime of the Republic of Uzbekistan."
