The city of Tashkent is set to begin restoring its traditional irrigation canal system, known as 'ariq'. This was reported by the press service of the Tashkent city administration.

According to the statement, these canals have for many years supported the city’s water distribution and contributed to a comfortable urban microclimate.

The city administration, in cooperation with the Department for the Use of Canals and the Improvement of Adjacent Areas, is developing a phased plan to restore and modernize the ariq network. The project will include:

  •  Cleaning and repairing existing canal channels;
  •  Restoring damaged sections;
  •  Organizing landscaping and tidying efforts along canal banks;
  •  Creating conditions for the regular and efficient use of canals in the future.

The primary goal of the project is to enhance water delivery and irrigation efficiency using time-tested methods, reduce dust levels in the city, and improve the ecological state of Tashkent’s surrounding environment.

The project is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 and is part of a broader, systematic effort to develop Tashkent’s infrastructure and improve residents’ living conditions.

Previously, the city had launched the “Green Belt” and “Green Corridor” initiatives to increase the number of trees, stabilize the ecological situation, and purify the air in the capital.
