Lawyer arrested in Surkhandarya for accepting $50,000 bribe

A lawyer in the Surkhandarya region has been arrested for accepting a $50,000 bribe in an attempt to secure a lighter sentence for a defendant. The incident was reported by the State Security Service.

According to the report, the lawyer, who is affiliated with the Jarkurgan district bar association, was under surveillance by law enforcement agencies. He allegedly demanded $60,000 through his contacts in the judicial system, promising to help the defendant in an ongoing criminal case receive a non-custodial sentence in the district court.

An urgent operation was carried out by the State Security Service in coordination with the Prosecutor’s Office. The lawyer was caught in the act and detained with $50,000 in cash as material evidence.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the lawyer under Article 168 (fraud), Part 4, Clause “a” and Article 28,211 (bribery), Part 3, Clause “a” of the Criminal Code. A preventive detention order has been applied, and investigative measures are ongoing.

It should be recalled that a similar incident occurred earlier in Surkhandarya, where another lawyer was detained for offering a $1,000 bribe to a judge in an attempt to resolve a complaint related to a criminal case.
