In Uzbekistan, between 2021-2022, law enforcement agencies received more than 72,000 complaints about harassment and violence against women and girls, and more than 61,000 of them, or about 85 percent, were committed within the family.  This was discussed today, 6 April, at the thirty-ninth plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

In this, the chairman of the Senate, Tanzila Norboyeva, pointed out how urgent the issue of violence against children and women is today in Uzbekistan.  It was emphasized that until now there is no special norm of accountability for domestic violence in Uzbekistan.

Also, 156 defamation crimes were committed in 2020 and 243 in 2021.  In particular:

•    The rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Yangihayot district of Tashkent city;
•    The situation related to the orphanage in Khorezm;
•    In the capital’s Sergeli district, a mother jumped from the top floor of a building with her 3 children.

“The bottom line is that our society needs stronger and stricter laws that are capable of reliably protecting the rights of women and children, and that are against cases of violence against our minors,” said the chairman of the Senate.
