5388Tanzila Norboeva, Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, expressed her heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives due to the hydrogen sulfide gas leak from the "25th Anniversary of Independence" (M-25) mine in Boysun District, Surkhandarya Region. She made this statement during the fifty-seventh plenary session of the Senate on September 20.
"On September 1, during drilling operations at the M-25 gas field, a violation of technological protocols resulted in the release of hydrogen sulfide gas. This tragic event has captured public attention, and we mourn the citizens who lost their lives. We extend our deepest sympathies to their families, who are under the care of our state and the President. Assistance for these families has been prioritized," Norboeva stated.
On September 1, the leak occurred from well No. 604 due to procedural failures during drilling. To ensure public safety, nearby residents were evacuated. Following the incident, senior officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister, visited the site. A leak prevention device was installed on September 14, and by September 15, the gas flow was successfully halted using a special solution called Barite.
However, another hydrogen sulfide leak occurred on the afternoon of September 17. Uktam Utaev, head of the Department of Supervision over Law Enforcement in Ecology and Environmental Protection at the Prosecutor General's Office, reported in a press conference on September 18 that two individuals had died as a result of the incident. Further updates from a briefing on the same day indicated that four people had lost their lives and eleven others had been injured, requiring hospitalization.
