On January 7, the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan adopted a bill prohibiting construction on recreational areas. The press service of the Legislative Chamber reported this decision, which aims to enhance the protection of lands designated for cultural and household use, as well as recreation.

The bill, reviewed article by article during its second reading, specifically bans the privatization or transfer of state-owned lands designated for cultural and recreational purposes. It also prohibits the construction of buildings or structures on these lands, except for lighter, non-intrusive structures. Additionally, the bill forbids the expansion of existing buildings or the reduction of the land area allocated for recreational use.

In preparation for the second reading, the responsible committee organized numerous meetings and seminars to analyze proposals from deputies. Reasonable suggestions were incorporated into the draft, ensuring the document was thoroughly revised and finalized.

Deputies emphasized that the new legislation will strengthen protections for green zones and recreational facilities, improve ecological conditions, and contribute to the preservation of cultural and environmental resources. The bill was unanimously approved in its second reading.

This measure builds on previous legislative efforts to safeguard Uzbekistan's natural resources. Recent amendments to the law introduced penalties for intentionally damaging or destroying trees, shrubs, or other plants through chemical or biological means during construction or reconstruction projects.

By adopting this bill, Uzbekistan underscores its commitment to environmental conservation and the sustainable management of cultural and recreational spaces.
