Uzbekistan does not recognize the elections in Karabakh – MFA

9934On September 9 of this year, a "presidential election" was held in the (unrecognized) Nagorno-Karabakh region. Uzbekistan, like most countries, did not recognize these elections, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued a statement on the matter.
"The Republic of Uzbekistan firmly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the friendly Republic of Azerbaijan, condemns any interference in its internal affairs, and does not recognize the so-called presidential elections held in Karabakh on September 9, 2023," stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
For your information, the parliament of (unrecognized) Nagorno-Karabakh elected 45-year-old Samvel Shahramanyan as the new president during an extraordinary meeting held on September 9. A total of 23 deputies participated in the closed voting, with 22 of them voting in favor of Shahramanyan's candidacy, and one voting against it.
It is important to note that this election was not recognized by the European Union, the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-speaking countries, Georgia, and Moldova.
