Plane crash in Kazakhstan: Were birds or drones responsible?

On January 20, a Red Wings passenger plane departing from Tashkent was unable to land at Kazan International Airport due to a drone attack in the area. The aviation tracking platform "Flightradar24" reported the incident.

The flight, WZ1512, circled approximately 80 kilometers from its intended destination before being diverted to an alternate airport in Samara. It landed there safely at 07:43 local time. Passengers were assured that the flight would continue to its original destination once Kazan airport resumes operations. In the interim, services were provided to passengers in compliance with aviation regulations.

Earlier today, reports emerged that the city of Kazan had come under attack from Ukrainian drones, as noted by Telegram channels and various media outlets.

According to preliminary information from VCHK-OGPU, "Mash", and other sources, the explosions occurred at the Gorbunov Aviation Plant in Kazan. Residents in multiple districts, including Aviastroitelny, Moskva, Kirovsky, and Novo-Savinsky, reported hearing several blasts.

In response, Kazan’s airport temporarily suspended all flight operations. Artem Korenyako, a representative of Rosaviatsia, confirmed via Telegram that the measures were taken “to ensure the safety of civil aircraft flights.”

Mash reported that the attack was allegedly carried out using a "Lyuty" drone. No casualties or injuries have been reported at this time.
