Mirziyoyev touched upon the events of Karakalpakstan

Recently, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev touched upon the events of Karakalpakstan in his address to the chambers of the “Oliy Majlis”.

At the beginning of his speech, the head of state spoke about the events taking place in the world.

“We all know that humanity is going through extremely difficult times today.  The problems related to the sudden change of the earth’s climate, the depletion of water and natural resources are becoming major threats.  The decrease in mutual trust in international relations, the increase in contradictions and conflicts pose a serious threat to stability and development.  “Unfortunately, such dangers do not escape us,” said the President.

The President emphasized that the unpleasant events that happened in Karakalpakstan deeply saddened the people.

“Thank God, with the intelligence and wisdom of our multi-ethnic people, the situation was quickly resolved.  For us, the idea that “the success of Karakalpakstan is the success of all of Uzbekistan, the concern of Karakalpakstan is the concern of all of Uzbekistan” has always been a practical action program and will continue to be so.  Will remain!” said the head of state.

He said that no force can affect the friendship of people who have been united like flesh and nails for centuries.

“Because our past is the same, our present and future are the same!” said Mirziyoyev.

We remind you that on 1-2 July of this year, in the city of Nukus of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, some citizens, misinterpreting the constitutional reforms implemented in the Republic of Uzbekistan, organized unexpected demonstrations.

The Dzhokorgi Council of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karakalpakstan evaluated the situation as an attempt to take over state administration bodies in Nukus.

Following that, on 2 July, the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev arrived in Karakalpakstan and communicated with the people of Karakalpak.

Also, taking into account that the discussion of amendments and additions to the Constitution is still ongoing, and after studying the opinions and comments expressed by the people of Karakalpakstan, the President approved Articles 70, 71, 72, 74, 75 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan in their current version.  On 4 July, the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan made a decision that articles related to Karakalpakstan in the Constitution will not be changed.

During the incidents, 516 people were arrested, 243 people were injured, 18 people were killed.  According to the case, a criminal case has been opened under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan (attack on the constitutional system of the Republic of Uzbekistan), Part 4 – “Conspiracy to seize power or overthrow the constitutional system of the Republic of Uzbekistan.”
