Karim Masimov, the former head of the National Security Committee of Kazakhstan, who was accused of treason and attempting to seize power, has applied for a pardon. This was reported by "Informburo.kz" with reference to the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Karim Masimov is currently being held in the detention center of the National Security Committee in Astana, based on a decision by the Anti-Corruption Agency.

"In fact, in March 2024, he sent a request for a pardon from this institution to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan," the committee said.

They added that in relation to Masimov, Article 218, Part 3, Clause 3 of the Criminal Code ("Legalization of criminally obtained funds and other property") and Article 366, Part 4 ("Accepting a large bribe") are being investigated.

For your information, Karim Masimov was arrested during the events of January 2022. The criminal case against him was classified as "top secret." At the end of April 2023, the Astana court sentenced Karim Masimov to 18 years in prison, accusing him of treason, attempting to seize power by force, and abuse of power and authority. Masimov tried to appeal the sentence, but the appeals court left it unchanged.
