Deputy Chairperson of the Milliy Tiklanish Democratic Party, Feruza Muhammedjonova, has expressed strong criticism of the beer festival held in Tashkent on June 27–29 this year. She shared her views in a post on her Facebook page.
According to Muhammedjonova, while Russian-language media actively covered the event, Uzbek media outlets largely ignored it.
“A beer festival was held in Tashkent on June 27–29 this year. The square was crowded with people, most of whom were young. Russian-language media covered this topic extensively, while Uzbek-language media, along with the intelligentsia, remained silent. Meanwhile, on the other side of Tashkent, a center of Islamic civilization is being built…,” wrote the deputy chairperson of the Milliy Tiklanish Democratic Party.
She added that this is not the first beer festival in Uzbekistan, noting that such events are gradually becoming a tradition.
“Alcohol festivals are openly held in Uzbek society, with public noise and advertising,” Muhammedjonova remarked.
The deputy chairperson also questioned who organized the festival and who granted permission for it.
“No modern city develops by trampling on its own identity. We know that in 1886, ‘Pawn Market’ taverns were opened in the New City of Tashkent deliberately to alienate the indigenous population. One can understand tsarism. But what about today? Who is supporting this event now, and for what purpose?” she asked.
In addition, Muhammedjonova touched on the issue of cutting down trees.
“The current discussion is not just about trees. It is about the life and future of a person. If society is so active in defending a tree, then we can place great hope in it. After all, the saying is deeply engraved in a Muslim’s heart: ‘Even if you see the Day of Judgment approaching, if you have a tree sapling in your hand, plant it.’ However, it seems there are two different standards: rebellion against cutting down trees, but silence in the face of a beer festival!” said the Milliy Tiklanish party representative.
At the end of her post, Muhammedjonova quoted the thoughts of Alisher Kadyrov, a deputy of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and head of the Milliy Tiklanish Democratic Party faction.
“As we protect a tree, let us also be steadfast in matters concerning our identity. After all, a tree will eventually be eaten by a worm. I agree with Alisher Kadyrov’s words: ‘I wish we could unite against the waste of water, land, energy resources, food, time—and our identity—just as we unite in protecting a tree,’” she wrote.
It should be noted that earlier, Alisher Kadyrov suggested that not cutting down a tree does not mean it should never be cut; it can be removed if necessary.
