Mirziyoyev and Michel Reunite in Cholponota: Strengthening Central Asia-EU Ties

Cholponota, Kyrgyzstan - The eagerly awaited meeting between President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the head of the Council of Europe, Charles Michel, commenced at the residence of the President of Republic of Uzbekistan.  Sherzod Asadov, the press secretary of the President, made the announcement.

In a video shared by Asadov, Mirziyoyev and Michel can be seen engaging in a heartfelt conversation, reflecting their long-awaited reunion. 

"It has been quite some time since we last met," expressed Mirizyoyev.

Michel confirmed the sentiment, stating, "Despite our infrequent encounters, you are often on my mind."

President Mirziyoyev reciprocated, remarking, "That's what close friends do."  He expressed his immense happiness in meeting Michel and eagerly looked forward to the occasion.

Following their exchange, the leaders posed for an official photograph against the backdrop of flags of Uzbekistan and the European Union. 

During the negotiations, both leaders expressed satisfaction with the high level of bilateral dialogue and exchanges, in line with the agreements reached at the previous high-level meeting held in Tashkent in October 2022.  

The leaders of Uzbekistan and the European Union agreed to diversify and expand the volume of bilateral trade, extend the validity period of the preferential trade system "GSP+," and enhance effective transport routes, with a focus on the development of the Trans-Caspian transit corridor, green energy, innovation, and joint programs in technology, digitalization, ecology, education, and tourism.  

Furthermore, discussions encompassed current regional issues, emphasizing the importance of continued consultations on Afghanistan and providing humanitarian aid to the country.  

Today the 2nd of June, marks the second "Central Asia - European Union" summit in Cholponota.  The agenda includes the further development of constructive dialogue between Central Asian countries and the European Union, as well as the expansion of practical cooperation.  

It is noteworthy that on the 27th of October last year, the first meeting between the leaders of the Central Asian countries and the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, took place in Astana, laying the foundation for strengthened regional ties and collaborations.
