Uzbek chess player Nodirbek Yakubbayev has sparked controversy on social media after failing to shake hands with his Indian opponent during the 4th round of the Tata Steel Challengers 2025 tournament.

Yakubbayev explained the situation, saying, "Today, on January 26, I told Irina Bulmaga about this. She agreed. But when I came to the playing hall, the judges asked me to at least show the 'Namaste' gesture. In the games with Divya and Vaishali, I could not talk about my faith before the game, and an awkward situation arose."

The incident has garnered attention, with many debating the cultural and religious implications. In the match, Yakubbayev lost to his Indian opponent. He currently holds 10th place in the tournament standings with a total of 3 points.
