Students in Uzbekistan were ranked low in World rankings in mathematics and science

The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (EEA) has announced the results of the mathematics and science knowledge of Uzbek students within the framework of the TIMSS 2023 assessment program. This was reported by the Ministry of Preschool and School Education.  

It is noted that a total of 8,800 students (including 4,450 in grade 4 and 4,350 in grade 8) from 166 schools selected from all regions of Uzbekistan participated in this study.  

166 principals and 1,035 mathematics and science teachers from these schools also participated in the survey.  
According to the results of the international report, the average mathematical literacy score of 8th-grade students in Uzbekistan was 421 points, ranking 32nd out of 44 participating countries. In terms of science literacy, 8th-grade students ranked 39th out of 44 participating countries with a score of 396.  

Uzbek 4th-grade students who participated in the study scored 412 points in science literacy, ranking 54th out of 58 participating countries. In terms of math literacy, they ranked 50th out of 58 participating countries with a score of 443.  

In Uzbekistan, girls in 4th grade (446 points) performed better in mathematics than boys (440 points), while the same gap remained in natural sciences (girls 414 points, boys 409 points).  

In natural sciences, girls in 8th grade (395 points) and boys (396 points) performed almost the same, but in mathematics, boys (426 points) performed better than girls (416 points).  

It should be recalled that earlier it was reported that according to the 2024 EF English Proficiency Index, Uzbekistan was among the countries with the lowest level of English proficiency. According to it, Uzbekistan ranked 98th out of 114 countries.
