5771Uzbekistan will supply 16 billion cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan by October 1, 2025, according to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
This amount is 1 billion cubic meters more than in the previous water management year, when 15 billion cubic meters were supplied from October 2023 to October 2024. Additionally, Uzbekistan will help ensure a stable water supply through the Friendship Canal during the 2025 irrigation season.
“Another topic under discussion was the automation of water metering in the Syrdarya. We previously identified the first 10 points in each country where such systems will be installed. Today we agreed on the technical conditions for the development of the feasibility study for the project. In February, a joint working group meeting with representatives of international organizations will be held to discuss further joint actions,” said Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation.
The ministers also agreed to jointly conduct repair work on interstate canals to enhance water supply to farmers in the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan and the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan.
Previously, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan announced that a record amount of water would be diverted to the Aral Sea. From October 2024 to January of this year, 1 billion cubic meters of water was sent to the North Aral Sea, which is 100 million cubic meters more than initially planned. Through agreements with Central Asian countries, a total of 1.6 billion cubic meters of water is expected to be sent to the North Aral Sea by the end of March 2025.
