Artificial lakes and reservoirs will be constructed in four parts of Tashkent. This was announced at a meeting held on 16 December under the chairmanship of the President, attended by city officials and public representatives.

It was noted that, like many major cities around the world, environmental issues are becoming increasingly pressing in Tashkent.

According to the Global Cities Index published by Oxford Economics, Tashkent ranks 471st among 1,000 cities worldwide.

Officials were instructed to work consistently to bring the capital into the top 300 cities with sustainable environmental indicators in this ranking.

To this end, projects for the construction of artificial lakes and reservoirs in four parts of the city are to be prepared within three months, after which construction work will begin. By 1 June, three shaded pedestrian streets, each five kilometres long, will be commissioned in every district. A separate programme will also be launched to create one green park for every ten neighbourhoods.

In 2026, 18.5 kilometres of canal embankments in the city will be reinforced. It was stressed that green areas and recreational zones should also be planned in these locations from the outset.

In addition, reinforcing a 16-kilometre stretch of the Chirchiq River passing through Bektemir, Sergeli, and Yangihayot districts will open up an additional 800 hectares of land. These areas are expected to include a 200-hectare green belt, as well as 250 hectares allocated for internal roads, parks, pedestrian paths, and bicycle lanes.

Earlier, it was reported that a unified traffic management centre would be established in Tashkent.
