Illegal Wildlife Trade Halted at Tashkent's Bird Market

10489In the Olmazor district of Tashkent, authorities have prevented the illegal sale of over 1,000 birds and desert tortoises. This was reported by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change.
According to the report, on March 15, the Ministry, in collaboration with several organizations, conducted a joint inspection. Footage of the operation was also circulated on social media.
“The inspection was carried out at the bird market in the Olmazor district to address cases of illegal trade involving wild birds and animals captured unlawfully from their natural habitats,” the statement read.
During the operation, 1,168 birds were discovered to be illegally sold, including 935 passerine species, 33 myna species, 200 lark species, and three raptors. Additionally, 35 desert tortoises were also identified as being illegally traded. All these animals were seized as evidence.
The Ministry stated that the seized birds were released into suitable natural environments. The desert tortoises have been temporarily housed at the Tashkent Zoo, while the three raptors were handed over to the Society for the Protection of Wild Birds.
“Following medical examinations and care, the animals will be returned to their natural habitats,” the report added.
As a reminder, it was previously reported that a golden eagle, listed in the Red Book of endangered species, was found being kept illegally in the Syrdarya region.
