14876A teacher from a school in the Sergeli district of Tashkent city has been awarded compensation for an occupational disease, totaling 337 million sums. This was reported by the press service of the Republican Council of the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Uzbekistan.
The teacher, D.M., contracted an occupational disease while working in 2024. According to a certificate from the Medical and Social Expert Commission of the Sergeli district, D.M. was classified with a third-degree disability and a 40 percent loss of professional working capacity. The re-examination was scheduled for April 2, 2025, but D.M. had not received the compensation for the damage caused by the occupational disease.
The Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan intervened on D.M.'s behalf, and the Republican Council of the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Uzbekistan conducted an investigation. It was found that, since April 2024, D.M. had not received the monthly compensation payments for the health damage caused by the occupational disease, which should have been 40 percent of the average monthly salary. Payments were also delayed or improperly made, and the one-time compensation had not been paid by the Sergeli District Preschool and School Education Department.
Under Article 321 of the Labor Code of Uzbekistan, employers are required to compensate employees for damage to their health caused by occupational injuries or diseases. In accordance with the law, the Republican Council sent a relevant instruction to the employer on December 5, 2024. However, the employer did not act on the instruction promptly, leading to legal action.
On March 25, 2025, the Sergeli Interdistrict Court for Civil Affairs partially satisfied the lawsuit. The court ordered the Sergeli District Department of Preschool and School Education to pay D.M. 19,275,204 sums in damages, 48,188,011 sums in lump-sum benefits, 268,706,000 sums for late payments, 1 million sums in moral damages, and 37,500 sums for postal expenses.
It is worth noting that earlier, the family of an electrician who died from an electric shock at a cotton gin in the Kashkadarya region was awarded 126 million sums in compensation.
