Reports have circulated on social media claiming that the Sergeli car market in Tashkent is being demolished. The Sergeli district administration has responded to the reports.

According to the administration, planned construction, repair and landscaping works are being carried out at the Sergeli car market to improve conditions for sellers, buyers and visitors.

“The main purpose of the ongoing work is to renew the market’s infrastructure, create a safer, more modern and orderly trading environment, and improve the quality of services provided to citizens,” the statement said.

The market continues to operate as usual, officials said. Reports claiming that it is being demolished are not true.

As part of the works, the entrances to the market’s administrative building are being renovated, and granite slabs are being laid. A new asphalt surface has already been laid on 26,500 square metres of the market area. Another 16,200 square metres are planned to be asphalted.

In addition, work is underway to renovate the roofs of shops selling spare parts. Disorderly advertising structures installed above the shops are being dismantled, display windows are being replaced, and containers used for the sale of second-hand spare parts are being given a modern and orderly appearance. Automated payment system equipment is also being installed to allow vehicles to enter the market without human involvement.

“The Tashkent city administration emphasizes that the ongoing works are not related to the demolition of the market. On the contrary, these efforts are aimed at developing the area, improving conditions for entrepreneurs and creating a more convenient environment for residents of the capital,” the statement said.

Citizens have been urged to rely only on official information and not to trust unverified reports.
