Historic mosques demolished in Samarkand

Three historic mosques dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries were demolished, and one was renovated without permission in the Samarkand region, resulting in a total of 46.8 billion sums in damages to cultural monuments. This was reported by the Prosecutor General's Office.

During control measures conducted by the prosecutor's office in cooperation with the Cultural Heritage Agency, it was found that the "Kushok Ota" mosque in Kattakurgan district had been demolished, causing 19.6 billion sums in damage to the monument. The "Ahmad Yassaviy" and "Khoji Urinboy" mosques in Urgut were also demolished, with damages amounting to 17 billion sums. Additionally, the "Kulba" architectural monument in Samarkand district suffered 10.2 billion sums in damage due to unauthorized renovations.

"Criminal cases have been initiated regarding these incidents, and control measures are continuing," the report states.

It is worth noting that last year, a 5th-7th century monument in the Denov district of the Surkhandarya region was demolished to make way for a barn.
