9340The mayor of Namangan has formally requested the Regional Traffic Safety Department to remove illegally installed radar cameras across the city. A letter outlining this demand was sent to the department’s chief.
According to the mayor, concerns over automated photo and video monitoring systems, which issue fines for traffic violations, have been growing among residents and youth during public discussions. The increasing frustration over these fines has led to a rise in negative opinions on social media.
The mayor further stated that cameras installed on rooftops, streetlight poles, and other structures in violation of official standards have resulted in both financial and psychological distress for Namangan’s residents.
In his letter, he urged the removal of cameras placed in Namangan city, Davlatobod, and Yangi Namangan districts that were installed in contradiction to regulations outlined in the April 21, 2021, government decree regarding private-sector involvement in road safety monitoring systems. He specifically requested the removal of these unauthorized traffic monitoring cameras from the KAAT system, along with the cessation of fines issued based on their recordings, while still allowing their use for safety purposes.
Earlier, a man in Andijan city was caught firing pneumatic rifle shots at 52 traffic radar cameras, causing damages amounting to 1.147 billion UZS.
