Over the past seven years, Uzbekistan has allocated a total of 61 trillion soums for road construction and repairs. This was announced on July 9 during a videoconference meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, focused on ensuring road safety and reducing traffic congestion.
It was emphasized that substantial work has been carried out in this direction since 2017. The amount allocated represents a 3.5-fold increase compared to the total funds allocated before 2017.
The meeting also highlighted key developments in road safety and digitalization. An online application system has been introduced, resulting in a 50 percent decrease in visits to traffic safety departments. In addition, 3,365 traffic police officers have been equipped with electronic tablets and body cameras. Artificial intelligence systems are now being used to sort traffic violations and issue decisions.
Furthermore, eight services—including driving license exams, road markings, and technical inspections—have been outsourced to private entrepreneurs. Special lanes for public transport have also been introduced in urban areas.
Recent policy relaxations were also noted. Last month, first-time traffic offenders received warnings instead of penalties. The camera-based recording of lane-crossing violations was suspended. During evening hours, regular drivers are now allowed to use lanes designated for public transport. Daytime road repair work in cities has been restricted, and it is now mandatory to install road signs wherever radar enforcement is in use.
