Tanzila Norboyeva, the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, addressed the UN headquarters in New York for the first time, as reported by the Senate's press service.
Heading the Uzbekistan delegation, Tanzila Norboyeva, who chairs the national commission on enhancing women's roles, gender equality, and family matters, participated in the 68th UN Commission on the Status of Women, proposing several initiatives.
This year's UN session focuses on discussions about eradicating poverty, promoting gender equality, enhancing women's opportunities, strengthening institutional capacities and funding, and implementing the principles of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
The report acknowledges the participation of parliamentary and governmental representatives, NGOs, and civil society institutions at the conference.
According to UN Women, 10.3% of women globally live in extreme poverty, demanding a pace of poverty reduction 26 times faster to meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
Hence, the conference convenes government officials, civil society actors, experts, and activists worldwide to devise strategies and attract investments to alleviate women's poverty and advance gender equality.
Representing the Central Asian region and Azerbaijan, Tanzila Norboyeva highlighted the burgeoning trade ties, joint investment ventures, and conducive environments for mutual cooperation in gender equality endeavors.
In particular, to combat poverty and foster decent work conditions, the report suggests integrating gender perspectives into global efforts like the UN Global Accelerator for Job Creation and Social Protection and enhancing STEM education, especially in rural areas.
Furthermore, within the United Nations Development Program projects in regions, there's a call to regulate the legal framework to bridge the digital divide, enabling digital literacy and IT skill enhancement programs, especially for rural women.
Previously, Norboyeva convened with Viola Amerd, the President of the Swiss Confederation, in New York.
