A 61-year-old man has been penalized for capturing and slaughtering monitor lizards listed in the Red Book in the Kashkadarya region.
It is reported that an elderly individual, who has experienced three heart attacks, was informed by acquaintances that its meat and skin could be a remedy for his ailment. Consequently, he embarked on hunting wild monitor lizards.
During his initial hunt, he captured 14, and on a subsequent occasion, he hunted down 18 gray monitor lizards. In his quest for a cure, the man cooked and consumed the monitor lizards he had caught. Out of the 32 monitor lizards, he ate the meat and skin of 12, reserving the remaining 20 at home for future consumption.
The court has sentenced the man to three years of imprisonment and has mandated the Ministry of Ecology to recover 141,900,000 soums.
It is worth noting that in June of this year, a poacher was apprehended in the Kashkadarya region after killing 43 gray monitor lizards and skinning them for sale. In July, another resident of the same region was discovered to be unlawfully housing nine gray monitor lizards and five Central Asian desert tortoises in his home, in addition to killing two rattlesnakes and displaying them in his yard.
