EU Commissioner arrives in Uzbekistan

2985On March 17, European Union Commissioner for International Cooperation Joseph Sikela visited Uzbekistan and held a meeting with Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov. Saidov shared the details of the meeting via his Telegram channel.
“We had a productive discussion with European Commissioner for International Cooperation Joseph Sikela. We explored ways to further strengthen relations between Uzbekistan and the European Union, focusing on economic cooperation, investment, and regional stability,” Saidov wrote.
Saidov also emphasized that the European Union remains a reliable and strategic partner, committed to deepening cooperation for mutual benefit.
Sikela’s visit to Central Asia, including Uzbekistan, was planned between March 12-18. His tour began in Turkmenistan, where he held discussions focused on advancing relations in the socio-economic sector. Key topics included trade, transport links, energy security, and the promotion of innovative and investment-driven activities. In this context, both sides discussed the implementation of the European Union's "Global Gateway" initiative. On the same day, the Commissioner met with Turkmenistan’s President, Serdar Berdimuhamedov.
Following his visit to Turkmenistan, Commissioner Sikela traveled to Kazakhstan, where he was received by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The two exchanged views on pressing regional and global issues, reaffirming their commitment to enhancing cooperation within the "Central Asia - European Union" framework.
Sikela's next stop was Tajikistan, where he visited the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Station, one of the largest energy infrastructures in the world. As is customary, he was received by Tajikistan’s President, Emomali Rahmon. They discussed prospects for strengthening relations between Tajikistan and the European Union, as well as pressing regional challenges.
On March 17, Sikela was also received by Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Japarov. The two leaders discussed key issues related to strategic cooperation. President Japarov noted that the European Union has been a steadfast partner to Kyrgyzstan since its independence.
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev is also expected to meet with Joseph Sikela during his visit to the country.
