The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has offered Uzbekistan a number of special privileges to encourage Tashkent to accept immigrants deported from the United States. This was reported by "The Washington Post".
According to the report, the Trump administration intends to use certain countries, including Uzbekistan, as transit points for the deportation of third-country nationals. Specifically, U.S. officials have proposed using Uzbekistan as a transit point for Russians and Belarusians deported from the U.S. The primary reason for sending immigrants to Uzbekistan is the suspension of direct flights between their countries and the United States.
The report states that Uzbek officials immediately accepted the proposal. Recognizing the political sensitivity of the situation, an American official reportedly offered several specific incentives, including a possible telephone conversation between the leaders of the two countries or other high-level dialogues. A meeting between President Trump and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev may take place in the near future.
The publication added that this situation could be exploited by “anti-U.S. forces, particularly China and Russia,” to disrupt the “deepening bilateral cooperation” between Washington and Tashkent.
The Uzbek embassy in Washington did not respond to the publication’s request for comment.
It should be recalled that on April 30 of this year, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in cooperation with the Uzbek government, deported more than 100 illegal immigrants from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan residing in the United States. The U.S. expressed gratitude to Uzbekistan for its cooperation, calling the operation historic.
