FIFA is reportedly close to disqualifying the Democratic Republic of Congo national team from the intercontinental World Cup qualifying stage and appointing Nigeria in its place, according to a report by The Guardian Nigeria.

According to available information, in November 2025 Congo defeated Nigeria in the African play-offs and secured the right to participate in the intercontinental qualifying matches for the World Cup.

The Nigeria Football Federation subsequently filed an official complaint with FIFA, alleging that Congo fielded players who did not meet citizenship and sporting nationality requirements.

Nigeria claims that up to nine players held European passports and had not formally renounced their previous citizenship. Under Congolese law, dual citizenship is reportedly not permitted.

The Nigerian side argues that these players did not relinquish their European passports and that the Congolese federation misled FIFA regarding their national eligibility.

Under FIFA regulations, a valid passport of the respective country is required to participate in international matches.

Congo, however, maintains that all players were approved by FIFA and were eligible to compete, accusing Nigeria of attempting to overturn the result through non-sporting means. FIFA has not yet announced a final decision.

For reference, if Congo advances, it would join Group K alongside the Uzbekistan national team, as well as Portugal national football team and Colombia national football team.
