12857Today, there are 24,000 convicted prisoners in Uzbekistan’s penitentiary institutions. Uzbekistan ranks last in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in terms of the number of prisoners held in penitentiary institutions. This was reported by Jamshid Sultanov, Head of the Department of Educational Work of the Penitentiary Department under the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
“According to the instructions of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to ensure the transparency of institutions, the number of prisoners in Penitentiary Institutions hasn't been calculated since 2019. Today, Penitentiary Institutions hold 24,000 prisoners», – Sultanov said.
He added that Uzbekistan ranked 177 out of 221 countries in the world. 68 persons out of every 100,000 people are convicted.
«If we look at the ratings, the United States has the largest number of prisoners, while Turkmenistan ranks second. In Turkmenistan, 500 persons out of every 100,000 people are serving time in penitentiary institutions. Uzbekistan ranks last among CIS countries in the number of detainees held in prisons», – Jamshid Sultanov said.
It should be recalled that in January this year, the Minister of Internal Affairs Pulat Bobojonov said that more than 29,000 people are serving sentences in the penitentiary institutions, including more than 7,000 in general-regime colonies and more than 22,000 in other types of colonies.
