As of the end of June 2025, a total of 1,605.4 hectares of land had been burned across Uzbekistan. This was reported by the Uzcosmos agency, citing satellite-based space monitoring.
Preliminary analysis of this year’s observations revealed 213 instances of land burning throughout the country. The regional breakdown is as follows:
- Surkhandarya region: 180 cases (1,324.8 hectares)
- Syrdarya region: 17 cases (135.2 hectares)
- Tashkent region: 3 cases (58.2 hectares)
- Andijan region: 3 cases (18.5 hectares)
- Fergana region: 4 cases (20.4 hectares)
- Jizzakh region: 2 cases (21.3 hectares)
- Bukhara region: 4 cases (27.0 hectares)
Urgent information regarding these incidents has been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, and other relevant authorities.
For reference, under Part 3 of Article 88 of the Code of Administrative Responsibility of the Republic of Uzbekistan (“Non-compliance with requirements for the protection of atmospheric air”), attempts to quickly and cheaply destroy land cleared of grain crops by burning are subject to fines of up to 10 times the base calculation amount (3,750,000 soums). In cases involving significant environmental damage, criminal liability may also be imposed.
It is worth noting that the burning of grain crops on one hectare of land releases approximately 500 grams of nitrogen oxide, 379 grams of hydrocarbons, 3 kilograms of ash, and 20 kilograms of soot and carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. These emissions contribute not only to environmental pollution but also pose serious health risks, including increased likelihood of tuberculosis and cancer.
