3206Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are discussing the possibility of allowing their citizens to use national ID cards as official travel documents when crossing the border, according to a report by "Dunyo".
An online meeting was held between the relevant ministries and agencies of both countries, with support from the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Baku. The discussions focused on facilitating travel and strengthening bilateral ties.
"The parties emphasized the significance of this initiative in simplifying the movement of citizens, deepening bilateral relations, and expanding cooperation in migration policy," the report stated.
If approved, the new system would allow Uzbek and Azerbaijani citizens to cross borders without needing a foreign passport, making travel more convenient and fostering closer integration between the two nations. Officials expect this measure to positively impact trade, economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, and tourism.
Since September 1, 2023, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have already implemented a similar agreement, enabling their citizens to cross the border using ID cards.
