Border posts between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan can be opened

Yesterday, on 25th April, the Uzbek-Turkmen intergovernmental joint commission held its third meeting on water management issues, as reported by the Uzbekistan News Agency.  The meeting took place during a delegation visit to Uzbekistan, which was led by Annageldi Yazmuradov, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan.   

During the meeting of the Uzbek-Turkmen intergovernmental joint commission, various topics were discussed, including the cancellation of the “time” regime for workers serving the water management facilities of Uzbekistan located in Turkmenistan's territory.   The restoration of the activities of the border posts “Tallimarjon-Tallymerdjen” and “Drujba-Gazodjak”, the joint management of Amudarya water resources and the automation of information exchange were also among the topics discussed.  

Furthermore, it was discussed that in order to reduce water loss, the Amudarya banks must be strengthened and its riverbeds straightened. Measures must also be taken to ensure unhindered water passage.  Additionally, the Tuyamoyin Hydroponic Sultansanjar Dam should have a wall built against water filtration and the “Capital restoration of the Karshi Pumping Station Cascade” (Phase-3) projects should be implemented.  

 The issuance of entry visas for foreign specialists to Turkmenistan was also considered.   A report was signed to confirm the issues discussed.

The intergovernmental joint commission agreed to hold its next meeting in Turkmenabad, Turkmenistan in 2024.
