Uzbekistan has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the first time in its history, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On June 7, elections for ECOSOC membership for the 2025-2027 term were held at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

In a secret ballot, Uzbekistan received 185 votes from UN member states, securing its first-ever seat on the Council.

For context, ECOSOC is the principal body of the UN and is responsible for coordinating the organization’s economic and social initiatives. It plays a crucial role in advancing the three pillars of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental. The Council comprises 54 members elected for three-year terms.

Additionally, Akmal Saidov, director of Uzbekistan’s National Center for Human Rights, was recently elected to the UN Human Rights Committee. Uzbekistan was also elected to the Administrative Council of the International Labor Organization in Geneva.
