Uzbek Ambassador presents credentials to the Pope

At the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Spain, Farrukh Tursunov, presented his credentials to Pope Leo XIV. This was reported by Dunyo.

During the meeting, the ambassador spoke about the large-scale political, economic, and social reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan, as well as efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions. He also conveyed warm greetings and best wishes to the Pope on behalf of the President of Uzbekistan.

Pope Leo XIV expressed deep respect for the President and the people of Uzbekistan. He noted that over the 33 years since diplomatic relations were established between Uzbekistan and the Vatican, strong potential for cooperation has developed, particularly in promoting friendship and mutual understanding among representatives of different nations and religions.

The Pope also highlighted the significance of Samarkand as a major center of philosophical and religious thought that has historically influenced both Eastern and Western civilizations. He emphasized that Uzbekistan has traditionally promoted the principles of interfaith harmony and tolerance and actively supports international initiatives in this area.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Pope Leo XIV said he would pray for the prosperity of the Uzbek people and expressed hope that friendly and constructive cooperation between Uzbekistan and the Vatican would continue to strengthen.

For reference, Farrukh Tursunov serves as Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Spain. On April 9, 2024, he presented his credentials to King Felipe VI of Spain.

In addition, the diplomat is concurrently accredited as Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Andorra. On March 11, 2025, he presented his credentials to Andorra’s Co-Prince, French President Emmanuel Macron.

It is worth noting that on December 11, Head of the Presidential Administration of Uzbekistan Saida Mirziyoyeva met with Pope Leo XIV on the sidelines of a meeting of the jury of the Sheikh Zayed Award for Human Fraternity.
