Uzbekistan will continue supplying electricity to Afghanistan in 2026, the Ministry of Energy announced.
According to the ministry, on 17 November, Energy Minister Jorabek Mirzamahmudov met with Abdul Bori Umar, CEO of Afghanistan’s Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), to discuss the current status of high-voltage transmission lines and substations being constructed in Afghanistan, as well as ways to accelerate the projects. The meeting concluded with the signing of a relevant contract for electricity supply in 2026.
The Uzbek side was represented in the signing by Jahongir Obidjonov, chairman of the state company “Uzenergosotish.”
For context, in February 2024, DABS announced that it had repaid multi-year debts of $627 million for electricity imported from Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
In December of last year, Afghanistan extended its electricity supply agreement with Uzbekistan for the following year. A similar agreement was also signed with Turkmenistan.
It is worth noting that on 23 September this year, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, speaking at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, called on the international community to unite efforts to support the Afghan people’s pursuit of peace and stability and stressed the importance of preventing Afghanistan’s isolation.
