A response is given to the reports that the Afghan military captured an island in Surkhandarya

On 21 August of the current year, two people died as a result of an incident involving the illegal crossing of the border of Uzbekistan by citizens of Afghanistan near the Prophet’s Island (Surkhandarya region).  This is reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It is noted that talks were held between authorized representatives of the special services of the Republic of Afghanistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan on the situation at the state border.  The talks discussed the incident that occurred on 21 August near the Prophet’s Island.

During the meeting, it was noted that there had been some violations of rules on both sides, which had caused tension in this area.  The incident is now being thoroughly investigated.

“The Republic of Uzbekistan expresses its condolences to the families of the two victims, all necessary medical assistance is being provided to six soldiers who were injured, and the processes of preparing detainees for their return to their homeland are being completed.

Both sides have confirmed that they want peace, that all issues will be resolved based on mutual interests and respect for each other”, - the report of the Ministry said.

It should be recalled that on 21 August it became known that 24 citizens of Afghanistan crossed the state border in the area of “Prophet’s Island” of Surkhandarya region.
