The Consulate General of Uzbekistan in Istanbul has called on Uzbek citizens in Turkey to avoid participating in or promoting rallies and demonstrations in response to recent events involving offensive remarks about Uzbek women. The announcement follows a controversy sparked by Turkish stand-up comedian Ummukhon Ozden, who publicly used derogatory language towards Uzbek women during a performance.

The incident has led to widespread calls on social media for protests near the Istanbul courthouse. In response, the Consulate General issued a reminder about Turkish law governing public assemblies and demonstrations.

Key Points of Turkish Law No. 2911 "On Assemblies and Demonstrations":

  • Notification Requirement: Organizers must notify local authorities at least 48 hours before holding an event.
  • Organizer Responsibilities: Event organizers must ensure the peaceful conduct of the gathering and prevent disruptions to public order.
  • Sanctions for Violations: Failure to comply with these regulations can result in administrative or criminal penalties for organizers and participants. Legal action may also be taken against individuals or groups who violate the rules.

The Consulate General emphasized that the Istanbul Courthouse is a high-security facility, making it particularly sensitive to unauthorized gatherings.

“We urge our citizens to refrain from organizing or attending assemblies and demonstrations, as well as from promoting such activities,” the statement read.

It should be noted that the Consulate General of Uzbekistan had earlier addressed Ozden’s remarks, clarifying that her offensive comments represent her personal views and do not reflect the sentiments of the Turkish people, who share a historically close relationship with the Uzbek nation.
