2079A criminal case has been initiated after the illegal cutting of over 2,500 rare and endangered trees, including species listed in the Red Book, in the "Omonquton" National Nature Park in the Samarkand region. This was confirmed by the General Prosecutor's Office.
The damage occurred when an unauthorized road was opened, and soil was moved in the area. The destruction affected 1,112 plants from seven species listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and 1,479 plants from five rare and endangered species. In addition, 64 trees and bushes from eight different species were either cut down or severely damaged. The total environmental damage was estimated at 1.115 billion soums.
In response, the Samarkand Regional Prosecutor's Office launched a criminal investigation under Article 204 (Violation of the regime of protected natural areas, part 2) of the Criminal Code. The investigation is being closely monitored by the Prosecutor General’s Office.
According to reports, five individuals entered the national park without authorization, using excavators and bulldozers, and began construction work through the "Yolsoy" section. Despite warnings from park officials that this was a protected area and that such activities were prohibited, the group continued, causing significant damage to the trees and plants.
Earlier, a similar incident occurred in Samarkand, where officials of "S.Ye.Sh." LLC, involved in construction work, illegally uprooted four valuable trees and one less valuable tree.
