Blocked, banned, forgotten: Why Rustam Tulaganov left boxing

Interviews

The Rio 2016 Olympics marked a new chapter for Uzbek sports, especially in boxing. The success of Uzbek boxers on Brazilian soil propelled the nation to its most impressive Olympic result at the time—surpassing even previous records before the Paris Olympics.

Uzbek boxers brought home an astounding three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal from Rio. Among those contributing to this historic triumph was Rustam Tulaganov, who clinched the bronze medal in the -91 kg weight category.

Tulaganov, who won over fans with his dazzling skill, speed, and determination, has since faded from the sport. Today, many wonder why the 32-year-old, who once shined as one of the masters of the boxing ring, walked away from the sport entirely. QALAMPIR.UZ explored the reasons behind his early departure and what Rustam Tulaganov is doing now.

Tulaganov’s exit from boxing, as it turns out, stemmed from a series of challenges and systemic issues that plagued his career after Rio. Despite his international success, the boxer says he faced neglect from the national team.

“After Rio, they banned me from amateur boxing. Then I turned pro and fought. Due to the quarantine, my professional career also stopped, and then I wanted to return to Uzbekistan and fight in amateur boxing, but at that time the federation prepared a document stating that Rustam Tulaganov should not fight in amateur boxing. As a result of such events, I moved away from boxing,” Tulaganov revealed.

It was a bitter chapter for the athlete, who once symbolized Uzbekistan’s rising boxing dominance. Denied opportunities to compete in international tournaments and with his path to amateur boxing blocked, Tulaganov’s promising career gradually came to a halt.

Reflecting on the changes in boxing over the years, Tulaganov noted significant differences between the sport in 2016 and the present day.

“Previous boxing was much more aggressive. If Uzbek boxers did not act with a clear advantage, victory would not be given. Now it's not like that. Now our boxers are winning even if they have a slight advantage and show technique. In our time, the victory had to be wrested from the opponent,” said Tulaganov.

His words highlight the evolution of the sport and the shifting criteria for victory, particularly for Uzbek boxers who once had to fight tooth and nail to claim even a narrow win.

Rustam Tulaganov’s achievements speak volumes about his talent and dedication. Beyond his bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics, Tulaganov earned accolades at the Asian Championships and the International Universiade, cementing his place as one of Uzbekistan’s standout athletes. His contributions to Uzbek sports were officially recognized when he was honored with the title of "Honored Athlete of the Republic of Uzbekistan".
