Uzbekistan has reached an agreement with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to cooperate on road repair projects across the country, the Ministry of Transport reported.
On June 10, Chairman of the Roads Committee under the Ministry of Transport, Jamshid Tursunov, held a meeting with a delegation led by Konstantin Limitovsky, Head of the Investment Block at AIIB. The meeting focused on current and future projects aimed at improving road infrastructure with the bank's financial support.
During the discussion, Tursunov expressed gratitude to the AIIB for its role in supporting strategic infrastructure projects in Uzbekistan. The sides reviewed the progress of the ongoing project to reconstruct the 78-kilometer stretch (from the 150th to the 228th kilometer) of the A380 highway, which runs along the Guzar–Bukhara–Nukus–Beineu route.
A new agreement was also reached to completely renovate 516.1 kilometers of local public roads—328.1 kilometers in the Republic of Karakalpakstan and 188 kilometers in the Khorezm region. The parties also discussed expanding future cooperation.
For context, during the opening session of the 9th Annual Meeting of the AIIB Board of Governors held in Samarkand last September, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced plans to launch toll road projects on the Tashkent–Samarkand and Tashkent–Andijan routes, as well as to build new high-speed rail lines connecting Tashkent, Samarkand, Navoi, and Bukhara. The President also highlighted the importance of AIIB’s role in supporting infrastructure development in mid-sized cities and rural areas.
