Mirziyoyev meets with the leader of UN Counter-Terrorism Office

Shavkat Mirziyoyev welcomed Vladimir Voronkov, the UN Deputy Secretary General, who was visiting the country to attend the inaugural meeting of the Regional Expert Council on the rehabilitation and reintegration of returnees, as reported by the President's press service.

Before the meeting, Vladimir Voronkov conveyed greetings and best wishes from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to President Mirziyoyev. They discussed ways to enhance Uzbekistan's cooperation with UN institutions, focusing primarily on combating terrorism and addressing other transnational threats.

Vladimir Voronkov thanked President Mirziyoyev for supporting the UN Anti-Terrorism Department's activities. He expressed particular gratitude for Uzbekistan's initiative in establishing the Regional Expert Council. It was noted that the first meeting of this innovative mechanism, held in Tashkent, concluded successfully.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the UN praised Uzbekistan's initiatives to repatriate citizens from conflict zones, rehabilitate them, and reintegrate them into society by leveraging the neighborhood institution's extensive resources and potential.

The meeting highlighted the signing of an updated "roadmap" for 2024-2025, outlining new cooperation directions between Uzbekistan and the UN Counter-Terrorism Office. The roadmap focuses on shielding young people from the harmful influences of extremism and terrorism, enhancing cooperation in personnel training, and organizing joint events for young professionals to intern at UN institutions.

Discussions also covered the situation in Afghanistan. The importance of increasing international attention to the conditions in Afghanistan and continuing to provide humanitarian assistance to its people was emphasized.
