17820The delegation headed by the special representative of the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Abdulaziz Kamilov, who is on a practical visit to the United States, met yesterday, 6 July with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres. This is reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The dialogue discussed the state and prospects of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United Nations, regional security, and sustainable development.
The Secretary-General supported the initiative of Uzbekistan to hold an international conference “Afghanistan: Security and Economic Development” in Tashkent on 26 July 2022. This forum will be attended by high-level representatives of the United Nations.
It is noted that Guterres listened with great interest to information about the essence and priorities of the constitutional reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan.
The sides exchanged views on other topical issues on the agenda of cooperation.
It should be recalled that yesterday the United Nations expressed its reaction to the events that took place in Karakalpakstan on 1-2 July and called upon the government of Uzbekistan to immediately investigate the actions of the security forces that caused the death of protesters during the demonstrations. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, expressed concern that the death toll may be much higher. However, the Foreign Ministry did not specify whether the topic of Karakalpakstan was discussed between UN Secretary-General Guterres and Kamilov.
