Visitors arriving in Tashkent will be able to leave their vehicles at parking areas outside the city and enter the capital using public transport. This was announced on 16 December at a meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, dedicated to reviewing work carried out in Tashkent and setting new targets for the coming year.
Earlier in December, a separate decision was signed to improve transport management and reduce traffic congestion in Tashkent. As a result, like in major megacities, a unified transport management center will be established in the capital. This center will analyze vehicle and pedestrian flows on every street and at every intersection using artificial intelligence, with the aim of preventing traffic jams and road accidents.
Next year, two entry checkpoints to the capital will be relocated outside the city, while three others will be reconstructed. These sites will include parking facilities for at least 3,500 trucks and 5,500 passenger cars, as well as camping areas for the public.
Public transport routes will be connected to these locations. Visitors coming to Tashkent will be able to leave their cars there and travel into the city quickly and safely by public transport.
The city administration has been tasked with installing 100 “smart” intersections equipped with traffic lights connected to a unified management system next year. In cooperation with entrepreneurs, 30,000 parking spaces are to be built, 300 bus stops reconstructed, 40 kilometers of pedestrian paths and 20 kilometers of bicycle lanes constructed, and 100 kilometers of roads repaired. Road overpasses and tunnels are also to be built in Yunusobod and Yashnobod districts. In addition, the purchase of 200 electric buses has been planned for next year.
It is worth noting that earlier it was reported that trucks arriving in Tashkent during morning and evening peak hours would be required to wait for three hours at parking areas near city entry points. In particular, five parking facilities are planned to be built at traffic police posts in the Erkin, Sharq, Bektemir, Uch Qahramon, and Turbanov areas for vehicles arriving from Tashkent and surrounding regions.
