On June 29, appeal proceedings began at the Tashkent City Criminal Court in the criminal case involving Sanjar Karimov. QALAMPIR.UZ directly attended the court hearing.
The case is being considered by presiding judge Abdullajon Mukhiddinov, reporting judge Umidbek Musayev and panel judge Anvar Do‘stmurodov. Sh. Shomirzayev, senior prosecutor of a department at the Tashkent City Prosecutor’s Office, participated as the state prosecutor.
In order to ensure the openness of the court proceedings and inform the public about the process, QALAMPIR.UZ submitted a petition to the court to cover the trial. After hearing the opinions of the parties, the court allowed the trial involving Sanjar Karimov to be covered only through photographs. This means that audio and video recordings of the court proceedings will not be made available to the general public, even though the hearing is formally open.
After that, reporting judge Umidbek Musayev gave the parties the floor to begin the introductory discussions. The defendant Sanjar Karimov is being represented by five lawyers, who stated that the guilty verdict issued by Judge Bahrom Berdiyev contained a number of inaccuracies and legal violations. In particular, they said the verdict left unclear the exact type and net weight of the narcotic substance, that the search of Karimov’s home, which was revealed during the trial investigation, had been conducted unlawfully and unfairly, and that Karimov had not intended to threaten victim Feruza Rahmatullayeva with murder or violence. They also noted that although the damage caused to the second victim, Shahlo Alimboyeva, had been fully compensated, this had not been taken into account.
The victim Feruza Rahmatullayeva and her lawyer stated that Judge B. Berdiyev’s verdict was fair and that they had no objection to the guilty verdict, adding that Rahmatullayeva was indeed recognized as a victim. The second victim, Shahlo Alimboyeva, also stated that she had no objection to the court’s decision.
Due to the lengthy introductory discussions and the limited time available for the hearing, a break was announced in the trial. Follow further developments on QALAMPIR.UZ.
