Footballer who invested in Champions: Oybek Kilichev's story

Interviews

The rise of Uzbek boxing stars like Bakhodir Jalolov, Isroil Madrimov, and Murodjon Akhmadaliev is a testament to the collective efforts of many people. Among those who played a significant role is Oybek Kilichev, a former Uzbek footballer with a storied career in several local and international clubs.

Oybek Kilichev, the brother of Uzbek boxing team head coach Tulkin Kilichev and the father-in-law of Olympic champion Bakhodir Jalolov, used his football earnings to support the future of Uzbekistan’s boxing talent. His financial contributions, drawn from his football salary, were vital in the development of athletes who now bring glory to the nation on the global stage.

Kilichev is remembered by football fans not only for his generosity but also for his remarkable skills on the field. Known for his exceptional free-kick accuracy, one-on-one duels, and technical prowess, he became a fan favorite in Uzbekistan’s football community.

In an exclusive interview with QALAMPIR.UZ, Kilichev shared his thoughts on the current state of Uzbek football, the national team’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup, and his perspective on the country's boxing future.

Previous coaches, when they came to the national team, would bring their players, leaving other talents overlooked. But Katanec is different. He came here to take the national team to the World Cup and doesn’t know anyone personally. If he’s given the chance, he can achieve this using players with genuine talent and skill. Firing him now would be a mistake," Kilichev remarked, referring to the approach of current Uzbek national team coach Srechko Katanec.

Oybek Kilichev had an illustrious football career, playing for various clubs in Uzbekistan as well as participating in championships in Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia. Throughout his career, he demonstrated an ability to adapt to different football environments while maintaining a high level of performance.

Now retired from professional football, Kilichev has shifted his focus to his family. Reflecting on his journey, he remains proud of his contributions to both football and boxing in Uzbekistan.

For context, Oybek Kilichev was born in 1989 in Jizzakh. Over the years, he achieved significant success, winning the Uzbekistan championship twice and representing the country’s youth and Olympic teams. His dual role as a sportsman and a financial supporter of Uzbek boxing underscores his enduring legacy in the nation’s sporting history.
