Permanent coordinator of the UN in Uzbekistan was appointed

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Austrian Sabine Mahl as the permanent coordinator of the UN in the Republic of Uzbekistan. This was reported by the representative office of the international organization in Uzbekistan.

Sabine Mahl began to perform her duties on June 1st. Before this appointment, Dr. Sabine Mahl served as the UN Resident Coordinator in Georgia from 2019 to 2024.

Sabine Mahl has been working in international organizations for more than 22 years. Specifically, she worked as the head of the UN Women's Office in Indonesia, Palestine, and Kyrgyzstan, and as a consultant on issues of cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

From 2007 to 2011, Sabine Mahl worked as Head/Senior Advisor of the High Commissioner for Ethnic Minorities of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, covering countries of the former Soviet Union.

From 2005-2007, she worked as the deputy head of the OSCE center in Kyrgyzstan and the head of the Central Asia department at the conflict prevention center at the headquarters of this organization.

In 2001, Sabine Mahl worked as the deputy head of the OSCE mission in Estonia, and in 2000, during the Austrian chairmanship of the OSCE, she worked as the first secretary of the Austrian Permanent Representation. She has also worked as Head of South-East Europe Unit at the Political Department of the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the European Parliament, at three different courts in Vienna, and as a lecturer in Croydon/London.

Sabine Mahl studied at the University of Vienna and holds two master's degrees (law and languages), and a doctorate in law. Sabine Mahl is fluent in German (her mother tongue), English, Russian, and French. She is married and has two sons.
