69075Today, on November 6, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the importance of a unified alphabet for Turkic-speaking nations at the 11th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States, held in Bishkek. He emphasized the need to intensify efforts in this direction.
"By overcoming challenges and resolving mutual issues, we can together plant the historical seeds for the Turkic world. I believe in this," Erdogan stated to fellow leaders.
Erdogan noted that a Turkish alphabet comprising 34 letters has already been developed by the Council of Elders, a consultative body within the organization.
"If we work together under the framework of the Organization of Turkic States, I believe change is necessary. Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Northern Cyprus are prepared to adopt a unified Turkic alphabet. We now await the decisions of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan," he said.
The proposed common Turkic alphabet is based on a Latin alphabet model introduced in 1991.
For context, the third session of the Commission on a Common Turkic Alphabet, organized by the International Turkic Academy and the Turkish Linguistic Society, took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from September 9-11.
