1987Uzbekistan is taking significant steps to address climate change by committing to generate 40% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. This announcement was made by Deputy Minister of Energy Umid Mamadaminov at the Central Asia Energy Transition Investment Forum held as part of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The Deputy Minister emphasized Uzbekistan's dedication to transitioning to clean energy and supporting the development of carbon markets. He noted that 70% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions come from the energy sector, highlighting the need for urgent reforms.
“Over recent years, Uzbekistan has been integrating renewable energy sources to lower its carbon footprint and achieve its sustainable development goals by 2030. Our primary objective is to increase electricity production from renewable sources to at least 40%,” Mamadaminov said.
He also underscored the importance of regional cooperation in the clean energy transition. Uzbekistan is currently collaborating with Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan on hydropower projects and other initiatives aimed at expanding cross-border energy relations.
Mamadaminov highlighted that all Central Asian nations are actively developing carbon market strategies. In Uzbekistan, a legal framework for carbon markets is expected to be finalized by the end of 2024.
The Deputy Minister also called for the support of financial institutions and the international community to achieve the country’s ambitious climate targets.
It was previously reported that Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan signed a strategic partnership agreement on green energy development and transmission during the COP29 summit in Baku.
