1354On November 13, 2024, within the framework of the COP29 summit in Baku, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan signed a strategic partnership agreement in the field of "green" energy development and transmission. This was reported by the President’s press service.
In his speech at the event, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized that renewable energy is not just an economic goal, but a crucial contribution to the future and a responsibility toward coming generations. He particularly highlighted the ecological significance of the project, noting that the energy transmitted will be sourced from wind and solar power, both clean and renewable, helping to mitigate climate change impacts. This effort supports the collective goal of protecting the climate in line with the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The leaders of the three countries acknowledged their significant reserves of renewable energy and the potential to make a major contribution to global energy transformation. President Mirziyoyev elaborated on the large-scale initiatives underway in Uzbekistan to boost renewable energy.
He shared that Uzbekistan has adopted an ambitious program for the rapid development of green energy, with 2 gigawatts of solar and wind power plants being added each year. By the end of 2024, an additional 2.6 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity and 300 megawatts of energy storage systems will be integrated into the grid. The country aims to raise the share of renewable energy sources to 40% by 2030, along with the creation of 4.2 gigawatt energy storage systems.
The agreement promises significant economic benefits, with the creation of tens of thousands of new jobs, expanded energy infrastructure, and strengthened technological and business relationships. The overall aim is to improve the standard of living for the population in all three countries. The project’s implementation, including the establishment of a joint venture and the finalization of technical documents, was also highlighted as essential to its success.
President Mirziyoyev reaffirmed Uzbekistan’s commitment to jointly implementing this regional "green" energy project with Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
