5759A mother who attempted to sell her child for $2,000 in the Tashkent region has been sentenced to eight years in prison, according to Aziz Obidov, the press secretary of the Supreme Court.
The incident reportedly occurred on March 29, 2024, in the Qibray district. Z.A., born in 1989, has a 13-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter. The divorced woman resided in Chirchiq city on a rental basis. During a sting operation, she was arrested after agreeing to sell her daughter, born in 2014, for $2,000 and receiving a $500 down payment.
During the court session, the woman partially confessed to the crime, stating that she was struggling to support her children.
"My son is disabled, and I am the sole breadwinner in the family. I have supported my children by selling clothes on the internet and at the Chorsu market in Tashkent. I have diabetes, and part of my kidney is not functioning. Because of this, I cannot perform strenuous work. Due to the difficulty of raising my children, I planned to give my daughter to a family in need of a child. It was not my intention to sell her," the mother stated.
The Qibray District Criminal Court found the woman guilty of human trafficking under Article 135, Part 3, Clause "a" of the Criminal Code, and sentenced her to eight years of imprisonment.
We remind you that similar cases involving mothers attempting to sell their children have been reported in Syrdarya, Surkhandarya, Namangan regions, and Tashkent city.
